San José / Pacuare River Valley

Head toward the Caribbean, crossing Braulio Carrillo National Park. Arrive at Rios Tropicales Operations Center in time for breakfast, and enjoy the gardens. Meet your river guides, who load your gear into dry bags, prepare the equipment and give you complete safety and paddle instruction. Class III rapids welcome you to the Pacuare Gorge as you raft deep in the heart of primary and secondary rainforest.  In addition to rafting, take short hikes to riverside small waterfalls, swim in the river ponds and sightsee along the way. Arrive at Ríos Tropicales Lodge, where you can spend the afternoon relaxing or exploring the lodge premises. There are a variety of walks at the Lodge’s reserve. Nestled in the jungle on a 1,000-acre private reserve, the lodge offers you Cabecar Indian style bungalows facing the river.  Private single and double rooms are spacious with clean linen, bathrooms and hot showers. Electricity is limited and generated by a self-sufficient hydro-plant. Happy Hour will put you in the mood for a tropical evening, followed by a candlelight wine dinner served by your guides. Pacuare River Valley / Arenal Volcano

After breakfast and loading the rafts, paddle the Pacuare past waterfalls, serene pools and pounding rapids. A snack stop by the riverside lets you explore waterfalls and natural waterslides. Your adrenaline-packed afternoon is spent running rapids like Upper and Lower Huacas, Cimarron, Dos Montañas and many more. Savor lunch and change before driving to Arenal. Arenal Volcano, with its almost perfectly shaped cone, soars 5,500 feet above sea level. From time to time, deep earth echoes are heard and clouds of vapor or smoke billows out of the top. The frequency of activity varies greatly from day-to-day. This area also shows the largest fresh water lake in the country. Arenal Lake is a man-made water reservoir favorite among water sports lovers and fishermen. Although the main attraction in this region is the volcano, the area offers a variety of activities including boat tours on the lake, stand up paddling, a canopy walkway, zip lines, hot springs, horseback riding, canyoning, sustainable farming and biking. Spend three nights at Arenal Manoa. (B,L)

    Arenal Volcano

Enjoy an action-packed day! Your transfer guide will pick you up  and drive on a mountain road to the first ranch house. Gear-up and be briefed on safety and rappelling before a short rainforest trek to the first waterfall rappel, where you descend into the canyon. Your  five rappels range in heights of 25-165 feet. The Monkey Drop Zip Line is approximately 82 feet long. After rappelling, climb the sides of a canyon wall, zip across the canyon and rappel to the canyon floor again! Continue hiking, spotting waterfalls, before heading to a delicious lunch. Stroll through the tropical gardens, observing birds, plants and flowers. They also grow veggies for your lunch, and all organic of course! You can check out the "Earth Hut" where they keep earthworms, compost, compost tea and a station to prepare the microorganisms for the soil. Your Costa Rica tour continues this evening at the Ecotermales Hot Springs, natural thermal hot springs with six free-flowing pools set in a natural river gorge. Water temperature ranges from 100ºF (38ºC) to 109ºF (43ºC) depending on the pool. When you’ve had your fill of the springs and changed into dry cloths, a buffet style Costa Rican meal is waiting in the restaurant. (B,L,D)

As you paddle, pass around islands and inlets where numerous marine aviary species and their nesting grounds reside. There is ample time to swim and explore. Stop in a hidden bay to rest and enjoy a refreshing snack. This is a good moment to try some snorkeling on this secluded inlet. Water visibility depends on the season but it’s never more than 30 feet. You are most likely to spot parrotfish, sergeant major, starfish and angelfish among others.
