    Vancouver / Sooke, Vancouver Island

Gather at the hotel this morning for a welcome breakfast and a briefing on today’s activities. Then depart for a supremely scenic ferry ride to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island. This two-and-a-half hour crossing weaves through the maze Gulf Islands, passing dramatic rocky shores covered in deep green forest. Check in to Sooke Harbour House a unique 28-room hotel with stunning views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains. Sooke

Juan de Fuca Provincial Park offers some of the area’s most spectacular coastal scenery. Embark on a half-day hike along the Marine Trail, passing old growth forest, waterfalls, estuaries, and numerous viewpoints to take in the dramatic surf-pounded shoreline. The hike ends at Botanical Beach, framed by high ridges of basalt interspersed with layers of shale and quartz. No only visually impressive, this beach is also famous for its vast intertidal zone where colorful marine creatures can be found in the crystal-clear tide pools during low tide. (Length of hike in miles?)

After lunch we’ll embark on a sea-kayaking excursion in Sooke Harbour. This protected harbor is the perfect spot for to explore, no matter your experience level with kayaks. The rocky outcrops and hidden coves may reveal seals and sea otters, as well as numerous species of seabirds as well as the occasional osprey or bald eagle. After an active day, tuck into a gourmet meal of locally sourced West Coast cuisine at Wild Mountain Restaurant.

The next day bike from Sooke to Victoria on the Galloping Goose Trail. This 34-mile paved, mostly level trail was formerly a railroad line and passes through wilderness, rural, and urban scenery. Enjoy lunch in Victoria, then set out on a walking tour of the charming British-flavored capital of British Colombia. There will also be some free time to browse the shops on your own, or perhaps enjoy a drink at the elegant Empress Hotel. Return to Sooke, with the rest of the evening at leisure, and another superb dinner at the Wild Mountain Restaurant. (B,L,D daily)

Sooke / Salt Spring Island / Courtenay

Bid farewell to Sooke Harbour this morning and enjoy a scenic drive and short ferry ride to Salt Spring Island, the largest of the Gulf Islands. Here, we’ll embark on a whale watching tour. There are several resident pods of orca (killer whales) that frequent this area, as well as sea lions, harbor seals, bald eagles, and occasionally humpback whales are spotted. After this we’ll enjoy a tasting of some locally-produced ciders. Board the ferry to Courtenay on mainland Vancouver and transfer to the Wood Mountain Lodge, overlooking a forested valley with views to Georgia Strait and the snowy Coastal Mountain Range. (B,L,D)

    Courtenay

Spend a full day hiking in Strathcona Provincial Park, located right outside the lodge’s doorstep. Dominated by mountain peaks, numerous lakes, creeks, and alpine meadows dot the landscape, the park offers numerous hiking trails to explore this pristine wilderness. Specific hike? Miles/elevation gain?

The next day is sure to be a highlight of your Vancouver Island adventure. After breakfast, transfer to Campbell River for a full day of grizzly watching. Dubbed the “salmon capital of the world” the seasonal spawn of five species of Pacific salmon attracts legions of sport fishers and grizzly bears alike. Board a private, high-speed vessel to an area where you may observe grizzly bears fishing, feeding, and interacting, both from the boat and from specially designed viewing platforms. (B,L,D daily)
