Atacama Desert

Chile's Atacama Desert

You are here

Atacama Desert

Chile’s Atacama Desert is by far the driest place on Earth – a sparsely populated plateau extending from the Pacific to the high antiplano. However, tucked into the barren, lunar landscape is a surprising variety of life!

    Atacama Desert

Spend three days immersed in the beauty of Atacama, which boasts turquoise-colored lakes, red plains, dunes, stark volcanoes and wonders like Salar de Atacama. One of the largest saltpans in the world and a magnet for flamingoes, this is one of the few places you can observe up to three species: Puna, Chilean and James, the rarest flamingo in the world. Your time here is spent on hikes, bike rides, horseback and even on nighttime stargazing excursions. Your Travel Planner and hotel staff can help you create your ideal itinerary. (B,L,D Daily).

    Hike: Kamur
Walk winding trails through La Luna Valley, taking in the wind-sculpted geological formations, plains and sand dunes of La Sal Mountains.

    Horseback: Cúcuter
Ride to the oasis of Cúcuter, where green vegetation and chañar trees contrast with the landscape of the desert and the milky colors of Atacama salt flat.

    Hike: Quezar Puritama
Head north to an old grazing farm before descending into a ravine, where you find the Puritama hot springs. Invigorate the body and spirit while swimming in these thermal waters.

    Bike: Ayllus
Discover both local history and modern life as you bike to the Tulor and colonial Beter archaeological sites. Get a taste of modern life with a stop in the ayllu — a traditional Andean community — of Solor, where we chat with locals.

  • Day
    5
