Today’s insider’s travel tip comes to you courtesy of our Creative Services Editor, Emily, who loves checking out the cities she visits on foot.

Do you need a suggestion for stretching your legs in Lima before starting your Amazon expedition cruise? Just blocks from our Lima accommodations at the Swissôtel is the Huaca Huallamarca, a pre-Inca tomb where more than 50 mummies were found. A small on-site museum houses one mummy, pottery and musical instruments that were unearthed at the site, but I suggest just walking the perimeter of the site unless you’ve allotted an additional day in Lima to explore. And while the restored pyramid is striking by itself, the most arresting part of this archaeological site is the stark contrast of Huallamarca with its surroundings. Lima has been built around dozens of similar temples, and the incongruous image of a pyramid dating from the 6th century surrounded by new construction and high-rises defines the city in my mind. The tree-lined streets between our hotel and the pyramid take you past beautiful homes and are perfect for getting in a pre-breakfast stroll. But don’t spend too long walking…the breakfast buffet at the Swissôtel is delicious!
