AMAZON INTERNATIONAL HEALTHCARE EXPEDITION Pharmacy from the Rainforest,
Global Perspectives in Healthcare
March 1-9, 2008
The Amazon rainforest is considered the most biologically
diverse and promising medical laboratory on Earth. The rainforest also provides
one of the world’s
most stimulating backdrops from which to explore this cradle of pharmacopoeia.
Less than two percent of all rainforest plants have been thoroughly examined
for potential human benefits even though one out of every four medicines we
use today stems from research in tropical forests. Immersed in one of nature’s
greatest research centers, we discover the vital role this prolific ecosystem
plays in present and future global healthcare.
Through interaction with leading medical researchers, renowned “pharmaceutical
prospectors” and traditional healers, this program promotes new ways
of thinking about healthcare and the vital link between nature’s unique
ecosystems, ancient medicine and modern cures. In addition to the accredited
topics, field outings are included that relate to topics of general interest
and deal with the rainforest ecosystem.
As an educational outreach program for healthcare professionals, the expedition
offers continuing education credits for pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and
allied health care professionals. However, expedition organizers welcome other
healthcare professionals and individuals interested in gaining insight into global
health, environment and cultural issues.
