Credit Overview
Set in one of most biologically rich and environmentally important regions on Earth, the Amazon Healthcare Expedition will enable participants to learn the links between the natural environment and global health patterns and practice. Participants will begin by examining the medicinal and nutritional properties of plants found in the rainforest and how they benefit the prevention and treatment of disease. The discussion will advance to the role of practicing cross-cultural medicine in resource-limited settings and how culture and environment affect disease contraction and patterns. The worldwide epidemic of malnutrition and obesity will begin to tie how environmental, geopolitical and cultural issues influence specific global health care problems. A lecture on the effects of climate change on global disease patterns will further illustrate the challenges facing health care professionals. A panel discussion linking what participants learn in the Amazon to practice-based application will conclude the program.
