Climate in Tanzania & Kenya

The Wilds of East Africa

East Africa's climate is ideal year-round, with temperatures averaging 70 to 90 degrees. December through March are typically the warm and dry months. April and May generally produce the heaviest rains. However, in recent years, May has been dry! June through September are cool and dry, and October and November are spring-like.

TIMES OF YEAR

  • March - May  —  The so-called rainy season. We say "so-called" because in many years there is more rain in January (the most popular travel month) than April. We prefer these months because the wildlife areas are so delightfully devoid of people, yet full of animals.
  • June - August  —  The weather is coolest in these months with lows of 40ºs F. (4º-10ºs C.) and highs of 80ºs F. (26º-32ºs C.). The migration may be concentrated in the Masai Mara during August and September. Although you may not see wildebeest on the move, they will be feeding on the lush savannah grasses.
  • September - November  —  These delightful months can be compared to springtime in the U.S. The jacaranda and other trees are bursting into bloom and the days are warmer: lows around 65º F. (18º C.), highs around 90º F. (32º C.). Scattered rains ("short rains") occur in November or December that freshen the country and lay the dust. These are sometimes heavy and most occur during afternoon and evening hours.
  • December - February  —  These are the "summer" months. The weather can be hot, although temperatures seldom exceed 90º F. (32º C.). Mornings and nights are refreshingly cool, with very low humidity.
