Jan van Riebeeck ‘founded’ the Cape in 1652 as a provisioning station for the Dutch fleets trading in the Indies. Today Cape Town is a modern, bustling city set dramatically at the foot of flat-topped Table Mountain. The city’s prosperity is still tied to the sea — it is the second-largest port in South Africa. The city, which now serves as the republic’s legislative capital, is a curious mixture of Cape Dutch, Victorian and contemporary. Known as the famed “Tavern of the Sea” and Africa’s “Mother City,” cosmopolitan Cape Town blends an eclectic mix of culture, food and colors. (Meals Aloft)
