It’s truly International Expeditions’ enthusiastic local guides that make our Panama tours so special, and no one is more passionate about his work than Panama Expedition Leader and Naturalist Ivan Hoyos ! We recently asked Ivan five quick questions.
If you could be any animal, what would you be?
An Arctic Tern, so I could enjoy two summers per year, enjoy tons of daylight, visit great beaches and constantly travel the world eating lots of great fish!
What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?
Tough question! Visually stunning was the overland journey through the Bolivian altiplano. Visiting Berlin, Prague and Bucharest just months after the Berlin Wall came down and Ceausescu was overthrown were eye openers. Cana, deep in the Darien wilderness of Panama, is where I have felt the most removed from civilization. Everywhere I have been is interesting in its own way.
What book are you reading now?
Empire of Love by Matt Matsuda. It is a historical account of the French influence in the Pacific Rim, including interesting tales on the French presence in Panama during their failed attempt to build the Canal.
Is there a past vacation or place you visited that got you "hooked" on travel?
My first Eurail experience at the age of 18. After two months traveling through Europe, I knew my life would not be the same again.
Where to next?
Australia in a week. This will be the sixth continent I visit and 50th country. Antarctica will soon follow!
