According to The Living Dead Sea, the dermatological benefits of the salty waters have long been known - the mineral-rich water and mud have been proven to help psoriasis and eczema. Now, scientists say that a dip in these waters could be beneficial for people with diabetes.
According to a study by scientists from Ben Gurion University and Soroka Medical Center in Beersheva, Israel, floating in the Dead Sea for just 20 minutes lowers blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes.
In the experiment, 14 people with Type 2 diabetes ages 18 to 65 sat in a pool of Dead Sea Water for 20 minutes. On average, their blood glucose levels dropped 13.5 percent, the scientists say.
The Dead Sea, which is actually a lake, was created by the same shift in tectonic plates that created the Syrian-African Rift Valley several million years ago. It has 33 percent salinity, making it some of the most saline water on earth.
