West Africa
Our journey to Mali, Senegal and The Gambia is one of the most sweeping and breathtaking journeys imaginable. We’ll begin in Mali, where we travel all the way to Timbuktu, right at the edge of the Sahara, and learn about the city’s role as a center of empire and learning. Along the way, we’ll explore the great town of Djenné, whose architecture is world-renowned, the bustling inland port of Mopti, and the country of the Dogon people, whose extraordinary way of life has long fascinated the relatively few visitors who have ventured here.
We’ll fly to Dakar, Senegal’s capital, and embark our beautiful 34-guest yacht, Callisto, for a remarkable seven-night voyage along the waterways of Senegal and The Gambia. We continue to the great delta formed by Senegal’s Saloum and Sine Rivers, whose Byzantine waterways are home to unusual wildlife and villages. Then we sail up the Gambia River, lined with dense forest, see fine wildlife reserves and visit some of West Africa's most interesting villages.
Finally, we see Gorée Island near Dakar, where for centuries slaves were housed before being sent overseas, and visit Dakar itself.
Along the way, we explore no fewer than four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Timbuktu, Djenné, the Dogon Country and Gorée Island.
We hope you’ll join us. |
