Spitsbergen & East Greenland
Bearing the scars of fire and ice; facing long, dark winters; and boasting summers of continual daylight, the rugged coasts of East Greenland, Iceland and the fabled Svalbard archipelago are home to fascinating polar landscapes, wildlife and cultures.
Our 14-day journey to Spitsbergen, East Greenland and Iceland spends much of its time north of the Arctic Circle — setting foot in places few humans have ever gone. Along with an infinite variety of ice and glaciers, fjords and snow-capped mountains, we'll look for musk oxen, walruses, seabirds, foxes, reindeer and whales — and the greatest prize of all, polar bears. Sailing the ice edge, we'll also lower Zodiac landing craft for a chance to cruise among the icebergs and go ashore.
Hiking in the polar desert of Svalbard; walking through the lush vegetation of East Greenland, where the fall colors will be starting to turn; or strolling the streets of Heimaey, a town evacuated just decades ago to save residents from volcanic eruptions, you'll gain a greater appreciation for the wild variety of landscapes and conditions present on these remarkable islands.
An expert expedition team aboard the 110-guest Vavilov will ensure that your memories of the region include a thorough knowledge and understanding of the area, giving presentations on a range of topics from Arctic flora to the physics of ice to the indigenous populations.
