No Egypt Vacation is Complete Without a Visit to the Pyramids of Giza
The pyramids of Egypt have long captivated the world with both their mysteries and their beauty. While the nation boasts several important landmarks, few have the allure and prestige of the Great Pyramids of Giza. Before leaving Cairo for other destinations or a Nile cruise, guests in the city of Giza would never forgive themselves for missing the opportunity to explore the only surviving structure of the original Seven Wonders of the World.
Travelers venturing to the complex, which is also known as the Giza Necropolis, will find a rich and astounding archaeological site that is beyond comparison. The complex primarily consists of four large pyramids and the monumental Sphinx, though there are several smaller structures found throughout the area that are also quite impressive.
Chief among these structures is the Great Pyramid of Giza, also known as Khufu's pyramid. The largest of the pyramids in the region, Khufu's pyramid is flanked by three smaller "queen" pyramids as well as a number of boat pits – some of which contain intact vessels from the Hellenistic age.
The Sphinx is another iconic piece of Egyptian history. Carved in the visage of the Pharaoh Khafre, this monolith is the oldest known monumental sculpture and an epic sight to behold.
