Tantalizing the Taste Buds in Ubud

Bali is known for its stunning beaches, lush rainforests and tropical species, but its capital city, Ubud, has even more to offer. This cultural mecca is home to many multiple spiritual and culinary gems that those embarking on International Expeditions’ new Bali cruise should not miss.

According to Frommers, the Balinese have preserved over the years a "native optimism and sense of sanctity about their rich culture," which is why the city of Ubud often has traditional dance and music celebrations.

Additionally, the island has perfected its cuisine. Travelers can find traditional Balinese cuisine but may also come across Padang food from Sumatra and flavors from Asia, Europe and the Pacific Rim.

For traditional Balinese specialties, visit Ibu Oka Warung in Ubud to try their famous Babi guling, or Balinese roast suckling pig. At Bebek Bengli, also known as the Dirty Duck Diner, guests can dine on nearly any duck dish imaginable. However, bebek tutu, or smoked duck, is Bali's most famous.

Visit the original Cafe Lotus, which was established in 1982 as a bohemian hangout for local artists and backpackers. Try eclectic Balinese entrees like be-pasih goa lawah, a fish marinated in turmeric, lemon grass and ginger then steamed in a banana leaf.
