Day 4

Yogyakarta: Borobudur & Prambanan

Borobudur rises out of the jungle of central Java and was built with over two million cubic feet of stone.  While Borobudur may not be as well known as many other ancient monuments around the world, like the Great Wall in China and Angkor Wat in Cambodia, it is equally or arguably even more impressive. The temple was built between 750 and 850 AD and was then forgotten and abandoned, hidden under layers of volcanic ash and jungle. Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1814, who was then governor of British controlled Java, heard about the temple and sent H.C. Cornelius, a Dutch engineer to find and uncover the temple. It has since been restored and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before heading to Prambanan, Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple. Built in the 10th century, Prambanan is the largest temple compound dedicated to Shiva in Indonesia. Rising above the center of the last of these concentric squares are three temples decorated with reliefs illustrating the epic of the Ramayana, dedicated to the three great Hindu divinities (Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma) and three temples dedicated to the animals who serve them. These three ancient masterpieces of Hindu architecture are locally referred to as the Prambanan Temple or Roro Jonggrang Temple (Slender Maiden); the compound was deserted soon after it was completed, possibly owing to the eruption of nearby Mount Merapi. Day 5

Yogyakarta: Merapi

The name Merapi could be loosely translated as “Mountain of Fire.” The etymology of the name came from Meru-Api; from the Javanese combined words; Meru means "mountain" referring to mythical mountain of Gods in Hinduism, and api means "fire". Smoke can be seen emerging from the mountaintop at least 300 days a year, Enjoy lunch at the Mesa Stila coffee plantation. (B,L)
