Kenya Migration: Wildlife's Greatest Spectacle
Seeing the great migration of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles across the African plains is a dream of just about any wildlife enthusiast. In one single glance, at the right place at the right time, you can see thousands of animals making their way across the Mara River or through the grasslands. On our Migration Safari we’ve scheduled four full days in Kenya’s Masai Mara Reserve, which puts us in prime position, with the greatest chance of seeing the great herds. Of course, there are no absolute guarantees, since migratory patterns differ somewhat each year, but our chances are just outstanding.
Part of the fun is the excitement of discovery. Maybe we’ll watch a cheetah pursue a gazelle at 70 miles an hour. We may well see lions hunting. Whatever we do, we’ll have a glimpse of our world as it existed a million years ago.
You’ll travel in go-anywhere four-wheel drive vehicles with roof hatches and window seats for everyone, and stay in some of Kenya’s finest tented camps. And as with all International Expeditions journeys, you will be accompanied by the finest guides, who are thoroughly knowledgeable about this region.
Day 1 • Friday U.S. / En Route Depart the U.S. on a connecting flight to Nairobi. (Meals Aloft)
Day 2 • Saturday Nairobi Transfer to our flight to Kenya, arriving in Nairobi this evening. Meet your safari guides and transfer to the world-famous Norfolk Hotel for the night. (Meals Aloft)
Day 3 • Sunday Nairobi / Sweetwaters Game Reserve After breakfast, drive to Sweetwaters Tented Camp, located on a private ranch, with views of snow-covered Mount Kenya. The day includes afternoon and evening game drives, with the chance of seeing all the “Big Five” animals (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard) and a visit to Jane Goodall’s Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Spend the night at Sweetwaters Tented Camp. (B,L,D)
Days 4 & 5 • Monday & Tuesday Sweetwaters / Samburu Reserve After a morning game drive, we travel to the Samburu Reserve, located in Kenya’s Northern Frontier District. Morning and afternoon game drives allow ample time to observe the abundant wildlife of the region, where there are unusual species such as the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich and Beisa oryx. We spend both nights at Samburu Serena Lodge. (B,L,D Daily)
Days 6-9 • Wednesday-Saturday Masai Mara Reserve Fly to the Masai Mara Reserve and the Mara Intrepids, whose luxurious tents are nestled among trees at the Mara River’s edge. Renowned for the presence of the wildebeest migration between July and September, the Mara is one of the world’s most rewarding places to see wildlife. Each day features morning and afternoon game drives. You may also enjoy an optional hot-air balloon safari over the Masai Mara. Enjoy dinners beneath the star-studded African sky, and a farewell bush dinner on our last night. Spend these four nights at Mara Intrepids. (B,L,D Daily)
Day 10 • Sunday Masai Mara / Nairobi / En Route After breakfast and a morning game drive, we fly to Nairobi. Upon arrival, we travel to the Norfolk Hotel and check into our dayrooms. There is time to relax or do some last minute shopping before transferring to the airport for our connecting flight to the U.S. (B,L, Meals Aloft)
Day 11 • Monday U.S. Connect with our flights to the U.S. (Meals Aloft)
